One of his ideas has stayed with me ever since: the Law of Familiarity.

It’s the natural tendency to take things, and people, for granted once they’ve been around long enough.

Think about the move you’ve been fantasizing about. You picture the restaurants, the grocery store you’ll visit all the time, the events that feel made for you. Then you move. Slowly, your new home becomes ordinary again. The restaurants feel boring. The grocery store has terrible options. The events aren’t worth leaving the house for.

You’ve become numb to the beauty around you, simply because it’s become familiar.

We do this with people, too. The partner you couldn’t stop talking about becomes a thorn in your side, and suddenly all you see are their flaws. Friendships and workplaces follow the same pattern.

Nothing about them changed. Your attention did.

We all fall for this at some point. The real question is how to prevent it, or reverse it once you notice.

Here are my top three ways to keep familiarity from hijacking your happiness, so you can see the beauty and gifts already in your life.

1. Gratitude as your baseline

When you’re present, you notice how much there is to be grateful for.

Relationships often end because familiarity breeds slow indifference. People stop noticing their partner’s effort. They stop saying thank you. Becoming mindful of what someone adds to your life is incredibly expansive.

The same works for everyday things. Take your fridge. At first glance, it’s the same food you always buy. Now look at each item. Many people handled it before it reached the store, and then your hands. And you had the means to buy it. Multiply that by everything in there, and your fridge starts to feel like a buffet.

2. The power of visualization

We all slip into autopilot: the same roads, the same meals, the same shops. But if you’re mindful enough to catch it, you can correct it.

When I notice it happening, I visualize how these places felt the first time, and I let myself feel it again. Suddenly I remember how gorgeous the rolling hills are on the road I drive every day. The shopping center that’s now routine once felt high-end and expansive, back when I was just a visitor in my city. In my early twenties, my dream was to have the means to do all my grocery shopping at Whole Foods. Now I have Whole Foods deliver my groceries.

Everything you have now was once something you prayed for.

3. Contribution over expectations

When you expect your partner to cook dinner simply because they always do, you’re falling for the Law of Familiarity. You dismiss their effort because you’ve grown used to it.

Reframe it. Ask yourself: What can I add to their life? What can I add to my life? That’s how you become the author and creator of your world, and that’s what makes life juicy!

It can be small. Grab your partner’s favorite snacks just to see them smile. Take a pair of jeans you never wear, sew on some fun embroidery, and suddenly they’re your favorite pair.

That’s taking life into your own hands.

Hustle. Bio-Hack. Girl Boss. Locking in. No days off.

The world is obsessed with pushing the narrative of becoming a better version of yourself. Who wouldn’t want to be the highest, best, most accomplished human in the room?

The problem is, if we are always seeking a better version of ourselves — are we ever really present?

But Lacy, don’t you push people to do self identity work? Aren’t you part of the problem?

Self identity work and quantum alignment should enhance your life. It should be used as a tool to enjoy your life.

The moment self improvement took over our lives, we lost the plot. Life is meant to be enjoyed.

Here are three beautiful, silky-soft ways to gently elevate your life.

1. we are no longer multitasking.

We are all trying to make the most of our 24 hours by being as efficient as possible. Habit stacking may have a time and place (example: meditation paired with red light therapy), but generally speaking - focus on one task at a time. The brain has to rapidly shift back and forth, which expends more mental energy than necessary causing stress and a job not done to your best ability.

This goes beyond our to-do list.

We are so dopamine-hungry, we often times are scrolling our phones while watching a tv show, while snacking. If we aren’t multitasking to get things done faster, we are doing it to numb out.

Make a new habit - one task at a time. This will feel extremely uncomfortable at first. Resist the urge to focus on more than the activity in front of you.

2. self-care is sexy as hell.

The hottest, coolest people you know are individuals that put themselves as a high priority. Part of becoming your highest self is recognizing that you are your greatest project.

Self-care is not meal prepping when you’re exhausted — it’s recognizing when you need rest, it’s taking the time to do makeup and nails because it makes you feel like you’re that bitch, it’s putting together a Spotify playlist that puts you in a flow state and it’s making time to read a book with a hot cup of tea.

3. make time for creativity.

What does watercolor painting or sewing a skirt have to do with elevating your self identity? It has everything to do with it. Each time you create and complete a project, you’re proving to your subconscious and the universe that you can take thought to physical reality.

Therefore, the more creative you are — the quicker you are actively changing your self identity. You are showing the universe that you are the author of your life and you truly have agency over your life. You don’t wait for good things to happen to you, you create them.

Hi :) I’m Lacy, the face behind LALA LAND. I live in Orange County, CA. I’m a woo-woo loving creative, mom and believer in the power of self-identity work through spirituality. I changed my entire life a few years ago when I started taking identity work and manifestation seriously. I transformed myself physically, mentally and found myself through this work and creativity. I hope to inspire you to do the same. ♥

The Delusion of “Try Harder”

You’ve been led to believe that in order to be the person you want to become or manifest your juiciest dream life you need to “hustle” or “work harder” to force the manifestation. But by doing this, you repel your desired outcome.

When you fight your physical reality in hopes of making things happen, you are operating from a state of lack. You are basically telling the universe, “This thing I want is missing”.

The physical universe doesn’t respond to what you want; it responds to who you are. To change what collapses into your physical realm, you have to stop fighting the external world and start architecting your reality through the Observer lens or “Observer Effect”.

Reality Design through the Observer Effect

The Observer Effect in quantum physics states that subatomic particles (units of matter and energy smaller than an atom) exist as a fluid “wave function” of infinite possibilities until a conscious observer measures them.

Your self-identity is your measurement tool. If your internal world is rooted in limitation, you will continuously observe limitation which forces the quantum field to collapse into that exact reality. The universe is in all senses giving you what you asked for. It’s what you were focused on.

Therefore, manifestation isn’t about creating something out of nothing. It is an act of Reality Design. You are essentially choosing an existing timeline where your desired life is already a fact, and matching your identity to it.

We can compare this to selecting a dress out of your closet. If you want to wear the blue dress in your closet, but you are only focusing on the red dress that you always default to wearing, the blue dress will remain as locked potential. In the quantum field, your focus is the hanger you reach for. You cannot experience the reality of the blue dress until you shift your self-identity and actively decide to embody the version of you who wears it.

The Quantum Bridge of Somatic Creativity

In Quantum Physics, wave-particle duality is the fundamental principle that every single subatomic particle can be described as both a wave and a particle.

Both states depend on how they are measured:

As a Wave: When unobserved, matter and light exist as a wave of pure probability, spread out across space and representing infinite potential pathways or states.

As a Particle: When measured, observed or physically interacted with, that fluid wave function collapses into a solid, physical particle… in other words it shows up in your physical reality.

Therefore, your thoughts and manifestations exist in your mind only as abstract waves of energy. They aren’t solid yet.

So how do you turn a thought-wave into a solid particle, you might ask? Through Somatic Creativity. Every single time you physically sketch a design, mix paint, style a space or piece together the perfect outfit, you are acting as a physical conduit to design the reality you want.

Creativity is the literal playground of reality design, my friend. It’s the real-world proof that you can manipulate raw, unformed potential into an undeniable, physical object.

The Practical Blueprint to Reality Design

Tool 1: The Pre-Creation Practice (an “Observer Audit”)

Before creating anything, take a moment to audit your current self concept.

Answer the following prompts:

1. What identity am I creating from? (is it the starving artist, the hopeful newbie or the master creator?)

2. If I were already established in my highest timeline, how would I be creating right now? Shift your state to this identity before beginning creation.

Tool 2: Somatic Creativity Identity Anchoring

Pick one tangible creative act this week in relation to the identity you are crafting and execute it with absolute uncompromising excellence and mastery…. as if you are already the person you want to be with the life you want to live.

If you are sewing a new top, sew the seams with complete attention to detail as the seamstress you are created to be.

If you are cooking a meal, plate it like a luxury dining experience. This physical action forces the subconscious to accept this new identity as fact.

Tool 3: Drop the Excess Potential

As we spoke about earlier… wanting something too badly, you create an energetic bottleneck that stalls your manifestation.

Grab a journal and pen and let’s draw out your game-plan. Set a massive life intention, design the visual coordinates for it and then…. drop importance. Intentionally channel that intense “gimme” energy into a new project, a painting, a craft or a recipe that is purely created for the joy of creation. This allows your manifestation to glide on in without resistance.

Since discovering Substack, I find myself rarely going on Instagram (and it feels pretty good!). I love spending less and less time on social media so when I heard about creating a “reading garden” on your phone, I was instantly into it.

A ‘reading garden’ is essentially a folder on your phone filled with pre-set media websites so you can read up on inspiring, creative or educational articles instead of doomscrolling on social media.

What I particularly love about it, is you can save really unique or popular media from other countries you wouldn’t otherwise think to check out to get inspired by cultures other than your own.

Here is what my reading garden currently looks like:

To create your own Reading Garden (I only know how to do this on an iPhone - sowwy!), you can start by selecting two media websites you want to live in your little garden.

Here’s some inspiration with links to what’s in mine:

Once you select two, go to your first website you want to include. Hit ‘Share’, then ‘Add to Home Screen’, then save however you want it labeled.

Once you’ve made two website buttons, press your finger on one till it shakes and then slide it on top of the other linked button to create a new folder. Name however you’d like.

Keep adding buttons to your reading garden folder until you’ve built up a little library. Now when you feel the urge to scroll mindlessly, you have a-little-bit-better-for-you type reading material.

A QUICK NOTE

This article won’t be for everyone. It may be long to some, boring to others. But to a select few, I wish this to be the motivation you were looking for to change your life. This post is for you. ♥

MY STORY

I couldn’t fully articulate the miracle and transformation self-identity gave me if I didn’t give a brief synopsis of who I am and what my story is.

I grew up in an extremely small town (think population 1,500 people). As a child, I was super creative, musically inclined and saw the beauty in everything. Even as a kid, I loved architecture, graphic design and played every instrument I could get my hands on.

Elementary school was a terrible time for me - the worst years of my life. While I always had friends, I was frequently bullied and had extremely low self confidence. By the time I was in high school, I had left the bullying group but still had a very hard time speaking up for myself and sought after romantic relationships looking for validation.

Throughout my 20’s I would date the same person in a different form - always someone who didn’t value me and wanted to keep me small. I married that person thinking this was the best I’d ever do. That relationship failed after eight years, just for me to enter the most toxic relationship of my life. I drank a lot during that time to numb myself from reality.

Once that relationship blew up in flames, I vowed to do the opposite of what I’d done and simply wanted someone who was kind. While I found someone kind, we lacked chemistry. We had a daughter together and while I’ll never regret that relationship, he never wanted me to evolve and in that way, I was held back for the five-ish years we were together.

THE FREQUENCY SHIFT

I began getting into spirituality after I had my daughter. I grew up with a woo-woo mom, so this wasn’t totally foreign to me but it was the first time I used spirituality as a lifeline when I emotionally couldn’t accept my reality.

After having my daughter, I lost who I was - or who I thought I was. I struggled to lose the baby weight, I struggled to find happiness outside of my daughter and no longer knew who the person staring back at me in the mirror was. My relationship was unsatisfying, my closest friends lived hours away and the creativity I once oozed, no longer lived inside me.

I began meditating for the first time in my life after becoming a mom. I used various apps on my phone, and eventually put my toe in the spiritual pond attending sound baths.

Simultaneously, I craved friendship and started making new friends using Bumble BFF. I started shifting my energy bit-by-bit, and made a really AMAZING group of friends that are now my core friend group in Orange County.

CLOSE, BUT NOT QUITE THERE

Like many people getting into self-identity and manifestation work, I felt better but wasn’t seeing the type of change I desired. I had made some lifelong friends, but I still couldn’t stand looking at myself in the mirror. You just know when your reflection is not an active representation of who you actually are.

Emotionally I felt an agonizing sense of FOMO (fear of missing out). I felt there was an entire lifeline or timeline that I had the option to step into that would be more fulfilling. Knowing that, the fear of staying the same became more daunting than the fear of change itself.

THE STEP-BY-STEP MANUAL FOR THE IDENTITY SHIFT

There are a million paths you can take to get to the same result. This is me sharing my path…. which I do believe is a fairly efficient one given how quickly I transformed. I hope this helps give you the framework if you’re ready for your own transformation. ♥

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

This sounds like a silly question, but seriously. Sit down with a journal (a fresh notebook and pen will make this little ceremony feel extra special) and write “WHO AM I?”

Answer this question honestly, and not the version you’re okay with someone else reading. My answer at this time looked like “I’m a burned out new mom who feels lonely, ugly, fat and unloved. I’ve lost my ambition and creativity. I feel like a loser. I feel washed up. I have no purpose other than to be a mom and give my energy to a partner that doesn’t care about my happiness.”

Then write this prompt on a fresh page - “WHO DO I WANT TO BE?”. Again, this can be embarrassing to answer truthfully. Get over that fear. Write the most honest, vivid picture of who you want to be. The answer around this time for me was “I want to feel alive and full of energy. I want to be a hot mom. <like I said, this can feel embarrassing to write but do it anyway> I want longer, thicker hair. I want smoother skin. I want to embody someone who takes care of themselves both physically and mentally. I want to be someone who reads consistently. I want to be more patient and easy going. I want to be softer and more feminine.”

VISUALIZATION

Visualization was the single most important step I took to manifesting my new existence. It continues to be a daily practice for me because it is that effective.

We are going to use Pinterest to start this. I am a BIG believer that seeing what you want helps you feel the feelings of already having what you want, and therefore draws it to you so much faster.

The Identity Board

Start a secret board on Pinterest and call it “Identity”…. add a cute little emoji too. Next you are going to spend 1-3 hours pinning everything you love to this board. We are talking a signature makeup style, clothing style, niche jewelry you like, photos of a specific vibe another person may have, hairstyles, a car you’re obsessed with, a refrigerator photo of the food you wish to consume, a girl meditating (if you’re trying to meditate by routine), a girl painting (if you wish to be more creative), etc.

When I say everything you love, I mean things that give you that feeling….. you know that feeling… the feeling that lights you up (that’s called alignment, my friend.)

This phase I’ve dubbed as the “identify as an artist” phase. Self identity work is really just accepting yourself as the artist of your reality. You get to craft and define yourself as whomever you want.

The Manifestation Board

This could be defined as just a vision board and in some regards, it is. However, I like to think this project is a bit more in depth than your average vision board.

What does the juiciest, most vibrant life look like to you? I do believe your board should stay mostly private, but some things that have consistently been on mine was feeling more fit and healthy, having a group of loyal girl friends, a deep and fulfilling romantic relationship, traveling all over the world, a specific lifestyle I wish (and now do) embody, etc. Both my Identity and Manifestation Boards sit around 150 pins, as you want to be thorough enough to assist in the visualization process.

A very optional step…

This will be a controversial, optional step and I honestly rarely do it but it can be helpful in certain scenarios.

If you’re having a particularly hard time feeling the feeling of having something based on Pinterest photo because it feels so far from your current reality, I’ve used AI a couple times to modify an existing photo to make it look like it was for me.

An example could be that you wish to make a toned body your reality but you can’t for the life of you make that feel real, you could use AI to modify a photo of you to having a toned body and then save it in your manifestation board.

MEDITATION (if you just “can’t”, try a different method listed here!)

Now that you’ve created your portfolio of visualization materials, let’s start the embodiment process.

You want to aim to meditate in the morning before your day begins and again at the end of your day right before you go to sleep. This will help you get into the frequency for the day and then again in your subconscious before bed.

Start by reviewing both your identity and manifestation boards right before meditation. The idea is that you want to feel that you already have these things.

Then begin to meditate anywhere from 5 minutes to longer. Yes, 5 minutes is fine!

Meditation Methods

When I first got into meditating, I used what is now called the “Activations” app. It was the perfect way to get into the right frequency. As you grow and evolve in this process, your methods may shift. This is normal.

I got really into testing out other meditations. I used the app “Open” for a bit which aesthetically I loved.

I also even used some free YouTube meditations. This one by Bob Proctor continues to be one of my favorite guided meditations.

Currently, my favorite method of meditating is listening to Dreamy Forest Music or 528 Hz Music on Spotify.

I also really enjoy meditating with my Lumenate Nova which is extremely extra and totally not necessary. However, if you tend to be unable to quiet down your thoughts (which is normal), this can assist with slowing down the mental chatter. The Lumenate Nova is an eye mask that uses flickering lights the simulate the effects of psychedelics without being on any substance.

MENTALITY SHIFT

This can be the trickiest part of the manifestation and identity shift work, you must implement embodying what you want while out in your daily life. It’s a very mindful practice and it will take some time to build up an awareness so be gentle with yourself while you essentially remember to remember.

Let’s say you want to become more patient and easy-going (this was one of my goals). I would intentionally put myself in situations that would encourage me to go back to my old neural connections like going to the grocery store during a busy time of the day. I would normally get flustered and frustrated in those situations. But new Lacy? New Lacy, my truest self Lacy wouldn’t. I would consciously smile at strangers in the grocery store and invite them to cut in front of me in line. And you know what? Suddenly, I felt amazing and it would become a snowball effect in every part of my life.

Another example, I wanted to physically look more attractive and up level parts of myself I didn’t love. By this point, I had done enough inner work that I had compassion for my former self and truly could say I love myself, I felt okay with getting some cosmetic investments. I would tell myself, the person I am (never say “want to be”. We are embodying that person now, not later) invests in herself. It’s okay to put myself first today. Yes, this sounds vain (and in some regard, it is) but botox and lip filler were absolutely a part of my identity shift.

In my opinion, it is a spiritual practice to decorate your avatar. Our entire world is built upon aesthetics…. a clean home, flowers growing outside, art on our walls, basic hygiene, the snow on the mountains, the rain forest. We love things we find beautiful. Therefore, taking pride in our looks is a form of spirituality and self expression.

SHADOW WORK

This part can be quite daunting because it will require you to go deep inside parts of yourself that can be hard to look at. Sometimes we even suppress memories and this kind of work can pull it out for us to face.

Shadow work is essentially working through blocks that are formed by parts of yourself that you hide or judge because shame, anger, jealously, etc. Working through these parts of you allows you to find more inner peace, achieve goals and no longer self-sabotage.

I first learned about shadow work when I did the To Be Magnetic program for a year. I would complete guided meditations around shadow work as well as journaling. I had many breakthroughs during the meditations that would result in me crying. Sometimes I knew exactly why I was crying but other times I didn’t know why, but felt it was more of an emotional release.

You definitely don’t have to pay for a course to do shadow work. There are plenty of free resources online. You can search YouTube videos and websites with journal prompts. If you’d like me to expand further on this and provide journal prompts, let me know.

EXPAND YOUR KNOWLEDGE

Once you’ve worked through this framework, I can promise you that you’ll experience some major changes in your life. Commit to being consistent for three months. You’ll never quit.

At this point, consider expanding your knowledge around manifestation, quantum physics and self-identity work. There are so many amazing books and leaders in this realm, you’re guaranteed to never get bored. There is always room for more growth.

The most transformative book I read was Reality Transurfing by Vadim Zeland. He is a Russian Quantum Physicist. The book is translated from Russian, so expect a few odd translations/typos. However, the information in this book will blow your mind. It’s not a light read by any means (a solid 700+ pages) and no joke, took me about a year to read but the principles will have you approaching life from an entirely new perspective. I love it so much, I even gift it to friends who are open.

Another great book is Becoming Supernatural by Dr. Joe Dispenza. This is a fabulous book that helps to expand your mind to the possibilities when one commits to their identity. You can heal from illness, change your perspective and achieve greatness. My one gripe about Dispenza’s work is that he tends to talk in circles. He can forget who his audience is by overcomplicating things specifically with his vocabulary and sentence formation. If you can get past that, the message behind his research is worthwhile.

The tools for expansion are truly endless. You can dabble in sound baths, reiki, more reading, therapy of all kinds, plant medicine, medicine cards, group meditation circles, daily affirmations, mindful positive self-talk, wellness rituals, etc.

This is a topic I could truly go on-and-on about and there is so much more to say. But for now, I hope this helped you.

1. Learning new skills just for fun

I have a subscription to Masterclass to learn about anything that interests me. So far, I’ve taken classes on designing floral arrangements, personal branding, time management and how to be a better communicator. I also have a subscription to Skillshare but I don’t recommend (bad customer service).

I’m always reading a book related to quantum physics, self-identity work or spirituality in some form. I recently finished reading Reality Transurfing by Vadim Zeland (couldn’t recommend more!). I’m currently reading Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz and just ordered Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes. I’m obsessed with anything Robert Greene writes about.

I also think it’s really fun to commit to a topic and get your license/certification in something that interests you, even if you have zero intention on using it as a career path. I got my nutritionist certification with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (highly recommend!), became a licensed Esthetician and took a marketing course with Marie Forleo.

2. YouTube channels that are really fking cool

I’m always trying to learn from others. YouTube is obviously the best free resource (other than the library). Some of my favorite mind-expanding YouTube channels are OpenSpace, MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art), Timestamp, Homeworthy, any interviews with Robert Greene and videos based on Carl Jung and Neville Goddard’s teachings.

3. Unique hobbies

I describe myself as a hobby hopper/collector. My soul thrives when I’m creating absolutely anything, so I don’t like to restrict myself to just one hobby. I heard someone say years ago that life is more enjoyable when you decide to identify as an artist. Whether that means making your morning coffee like a barista or take photos like you’re a photographer, you can turn anything into a hobby.

I like using Instagram as a digital journal to track memories. I also like to bead jewelry, crochet, paint (I’m terrible at it but I just don’t care), play on Pinterest, singing in the shower and car like I’m in concert, bake, cook and crafts with my daughter. My newest hobbies are now Substack, soon to be video creation and sewing. I grew up playing many different instruments and would like to learn the hand pan drum next.

4. Collecting unique items

I love collecting Christmas ornaments from different places (when I remember to get them). A Christmas tree with unique ornaments just hits harder than an “aesthetic” tree. I recently decided to start collecting tattoos when I travel. I got a couple in Japan recently and another in LA.

5. Pushing yourself to try new things

This is actually a semi-new category for me. I used to be horrific in social situations and making conversations, so I had a podcast for about a year interviewing all kinds of experts in the wellness space to help me improve in this area and push myself. It really worked!

My newest goal is to push myself physically more. My boyfriend Zack is a huge inspiration to me in this category. He really just goes for it and is always challenging himself whether it be surfing, mountain biking, working out or rock climbing. While our physical interests may be slightly different, I’ve been challenging myself more with strength training, biking with Zack when I can and hiking. I want to try rock climbing with him next.

EXTRA CREDIT LIFE EXPANDERS

Thrifting or DIYing

I love nothing more than spending a day thrifting. There’s something about finding unique clothing, cool house decor and vintage finds that really gets me going. Now that I’m taking up sewing, I will be absolutely insufferable when I can customize it all!

Service to others

I wake up some days, and my only goal will be to compliment (real compliments) as many strangers and friends as possible. I think we keep a lot of positive thoughts about other people to ourselves, not realizing those compliments could really brighten their day. I try to donate as many things as I can when I go on my minimalism sprees. I also consider my open-book personality as a service to others because I will literally tell you anything you want to know. I’ve completely transformed my life emotionally and physically - anytime someone wants to know how I did it, I will give them step-by-step instructions. Being kind to others is free and makes being a human more fun.
